365 Days of Meditation

As I journey into the new year, I thought it would be helpful to create a formal practice for meditation.  Who on this planet couldn’t use some time to reflect and de-compress?  I want to do this not only for myself, but for others, such as my clients that could learn from my experiences.  I mentioned in my last blog that in order to rebalance stress hormones in the body, we need to engage in activities that promote the relaxation response in the body supported by the parasympathetic nervous system.  “The parasympathetic nervous system supports digestive and repair processes and opposes the effects of the sympathetic nervous system.”

As my family and friends know my slightly A- Type personality well, they are likely thinking, “Cat, sitting still and meditating?  Ha ha ha!”  Well, here I go and I am taking anyone who wants to participate with me….

What is Meditation?

Meditation is the art of focusing 100% of your attention in one area.  There is a myriad of well-publicised health benefits including increased concentration, improved sense of awareness, improved immunity, vitality and a general feeling of happiness.

Famous expert of Tai Chi and Qigong, Master Fong Ha, states in his book, Yiquan and the Nature of Energy-The Fine Art of Doing Nothing and Achieving Everything, that “aging can be seen ultimately as a decline in the life force or vitality, with death the end point of this decline, and since disciplines like Yiquan (standing meditation) work directly to cultivate vitality, they might well prove to be among the most valuable resources available to us as we strive for the longest, most vital lives possible.”

So add in the benefit on deceleration of aging.  That is a lot of positives, don’t you think?

My Challenge

I have decided to embark on 365 days of meditation. Pretty well-versed in yoga and a little pranayama breath work, the idea of sitting and doing nada is a challenging one.  I have joined a Face Book group Meditation Every Day for 365 Days, and I would like to invite you all to participate, whatever level you think you are.  We will all learn from each other!
