Cleansing for Sissies Like Me

Today is day 7 of my 10 day cleanse.  I seemed to have planned it well –  no strenuous activities and lots of time to relax and prepare delicious, yet constrained, food at home.

I will give it to you straight.  It ain’t easy for me!  I am a serious eater and not great with deprivation. Fortunately, I am putting myself through a solid protocol detox from a company that has a natural vanilla shake as a companion.  The shake actually fuels the detoxification mechanism with nutrients that are needed to achieve optimal detoxification activity. No Master Cleanse or Juice Fast here!

Did you know that there are specific nutrients that are needed to support and protect the function of the organs (liver, intestinal tract and kidneys) that are involved in detoxification?  Take the liver for instance….  As you know, it is the filter of toxic substances that have entered the blood.  It has to turn bad stuff into less harmful to be excreted in the urine.  Nutrients such as Vitamin A, B3, B6, C, and E, beta-carotene, the amino acids L-cysteine and L-glutamine, substances such as glutathione and phospholipids are some of the substances that support liver function.

Cultures around the world have used cleansing methods to promote health for thousands of years.

Why would a healthy person need to detox?

Some startling statistics:

  • Over 167 synthetic chemicals and carcinogens are now found in the average human body.
  • In the U.S., 4 billion pounds of pesticides are used annually (8 pounds for every man, woman and child)
  • Over 6 billion pounds of chemical pollutants were released into the environment we eat, breathe and live in, in one year.
  • We have replaced and refined natural occurring nutrients with artificial coloring, flavorings, preservatives and conditioners.
  • We are polluted internally by the extensive use of antibiotics both in medicine and in agriculture.

These environmental impurities can build up inside us, damaging cells, causing or aggravating health problems and sabotaging weight loss efforts.

What are some things we can do to avoid toxicity?

  • Remove offenders such as cleaning agents, insecticides, abrasives, aerosols etc., if possible.
  • Get rid of sources of toxicity such as chemicals, paints, solvents, glues etc.
  • Replace furnace and air conditioning filters regularly.
  • Eat organically, whenever possible, with plenty of fresh, wholesome foods.  Avoid foods with refined sugar, hydrogenated fats, additives and preservatives.
  • Drink plenty of filtered water. (half your body weight in pounds= minimum amount of water you need to drink in ounces)
  • Partake in a healthy cleanse at least once a year.  I currently use Metagenic’s UltraClear for nutritional support during detoxification and have had great results.

I’ll fill you in with more details of my 10 day experience later this week…..
