Insights to “Blue-Zones”

Last post I talked about how experts report that only a small percentage of our aging process has to do with our genes.  That lifestyle choices are actually more of a determining factor in genetic expression.

In this 5 minute video presentation, journalist and photographer, David McLain travels to the areas of the world reporting high longevity rates to discover their secrets to a longer life. These longevity hot-spots, regions of the world where people commonly live past the age of 100, are called, “Blue Zones”.

Amazing cultures such as the Sardinian’s (Italy), the Okinowan’s (Japan) and the 7th Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California are examined in this video.  Other Blue Zones have been identified, such as the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and Icaria in Greece.

The common characteristics of the people inhabiting these Blue Zones which contribute to their longevity are the following:

  • Family- Family is held more important than other concerns.
  • No smoking- Don’t typically smoke.
  • Plant-based diet- The majority of calories are derived from plants.
  • Constant moderate physical activity- Exercise is built in to lifestyle.
  • Social engagement- People of all ages are more socially active in their communities.
  • Legumes- Legumes are commonly consumed.
