Would You Like to Have a Better Relationship With Food?

I’ve been immersed in my books about the things I love this month:  Food and Nutrition, Anatomy and Pilates,…. Yesterday I completed a wonderful book by a physican and meditation instructor, Jan Chozen Bays, MD, called, “Mindful Eating“.  The book had reading appeal to me, as I have grown more and more accustomed to the world around me becoming so hungry (pardon the expression) for alternative and healthier ways to view and eat food.

Mindful eating is not directed by charts, tables, or scales.  It is not directed by experts or nutritionists like myself.  Mindful eating replaces self-criticsm with self-nurturing. It replaces shame with respect for your own inner wisdom.  Mindful eating is not based on anxiety about the future, but on choices that you have in front of you.  It is directed by your own inner experience, moment by moment.

Take Susan for example.  On her way home from work she thinks dreadful thoughts on the presentation she has to give in the next few days.  When when she gets home, she decides to plop on the couch and have a few chips. She starts with a couple.  The show being watching grows more and more dramatic and she starts to eat faster and faster.  The show ends. She looks down to see only salt and crunchy chip bits at the bottom of her bag.  She scolds herself for wasting the time and for eating junk.  “Too much fat ….. Too much salt….  Forget dinner!” Trapped in the TV drama, covering up her anxiety about procrastinating, she ignored what was happening in her mind, heart, mouth and stomach.    She ate to go unconscious. She goes to bed undernourished in body and soul and with her mind still anxious about her presentation.  Does this sound all too familiar?

Next post I’ll write more about mindful eating and how we can transform our struggles with food and renew our sense of pleasure and satisfaction with eating.  I’ll discuss the 7 Types of Hunger and Simple Guidelines for Mindful Eating.
