The Truth About GMO’s

What would you do?  If there was a new supplement that could make you look only a little better, possibly live a little longer but could have potential health risks such as disrupting liver and kidney function, damage immune function, shrink your brain, and cause birth defects. Would you take it?

Take note.  These are only a few of the reactions witnessed on laboratory animals fed GMO’s that raise concerns regarding the safety of GM foods for humans as well as animals. GMO’s don’t provide any health benefits only economic.

What are GMO’s??

A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process of taking genes from one species and inserting them into another in an attempt to obtain a desired trait or characteristic, hence they are also known as transgenic organisms. This process may be called either Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM); they are one and the same.

For a clear cut description of how genetic engineering affects the planet read the Seeds of Deception.

Contrary to industry claims, GM foods are not properly tested for human safety before they are released for sale. In fact, the only published study directly testing the safety of a GM food on humans found potential problems. To date, this study has not been followed up.

Typically the response to the safety question is that people have been eating GM foods in the United States and elsewhere for more than ten years without ill effects and that this proves that the products are safe. But GM foods are not labelled in the US and other nations where they are widely eaten and consumers are not monitored for health effects.

So….  it’s, “Buyer Beware”.  The only way to truly know that you aren’t consuming any GMO ingredients is to buy only “certified organic” foods.  That’s right, even buying at you favourite health food store is not enough.  If you buy an non-organic energy bar, for instance, you can probably expect some GMO ingredients somewhere on the list, especially if any of the ingredients are soy, canola or corn.  Click here for a chart of the increase of genetically engineered crops in the U.S from the 90’s until 2011.

Europe has greater rejection of GMOs due to a more balanced reporting by their press on the health and environmental dangers. At least 174 regions, more than 4,500 councils and local governments have declared themselves GM free.

In the U.S. and Canada, citizens are asking for mandatory labels on all foods containing GMO’s.  The government does not want to create labels for  all GMO foods for fear that it will create a backlash against those products.

Some good news?

California has launched a ballot initiative to require mandatory GM labeling of all foods sold there!  If passed, this could be the beginning of the end of GMO’s in America.  Here are the details and links to the audio that you can download.
