Eating Fish… Are We Safe?

I hope you are well and that you have been giving yourself all the care and love that you so well deserve.  I want to share one of my easy weekend recipes for, “Portofino Seafood Salad“.  You can scroll down to the bottom to get the link!

I am sure you are asking, “but Cat…..  Is eating fish/seafood still safe?”

Afraid of Fukushima radiation, high mercury, PCB’s and dioxins?

You are right to be concerned, but allow me to calm your fears….

According to Chris Kresser, LAC and Integrative Medicine Specialist, A typical restaurant-sized portion of Pacific bluefin tuna (200 grams, or 7 ounces) contains about 5% of the radiation you would get from eating one uncontaminated banana and absorbing it’s naturally occurring radiation.

Here are some other important factors to consider….

-Selenium protects against mercury toxicity. (Did you know that 16 out of the 25 highest dietary sources of selenium are ocean fish?)

-If a fish contains higher levels of selenium than mercury, it is safe to eat. (Most US fish have more selenium than mercury)

-The benefits of fish consumption outweigh the potential risk.  Having said that, I still limit my consumption to 2 to 3 tops meals per week.  The rest of the time I’ll pop a clean fish oil or fermented cod liver oil cap just to make sure I get all my DHA/EPA and other factors.

If you are trusting the barrage of info saying we are doomed, beware.  Check and see if it includes references to studies published in peer-revied journals by independent researchers.  If not, please put your skeptical spectacles on!
