3 Awesome Anti-Aging Antioxidants

Plant scientists have discovered that there are major differences between wild plants and our modern varieties. Plants made in nature have much higher phytonutrients. Plant can’t fight their enemies or hide from them, so they protect themselves by producing chemical compounds that protect from bugs, disease, bad weather and foraging animals.

More than 8,000 phytonutrients have been discovered to date and each plant produces several hundreds. Many of the compounds function as potent anti-oxidants. Antioxidants are one of the important keys to slowing aging because they protect our cells against free radicals (oxidation).

Many plants, including herbs, contain various antioxidants so we should aim to eat them as much as we can. But it is apparent that our meals might not provide everything we need, especially for seniors, kids, chronically ill individuals or those who want to perform at a higher level. Supplements may help bridge the nutritional gap.

So, you want to slow down aging I hear?

Here are a few plant-derived antioxidants that have been studied to their anti-aging effects:

  • Curcumin: This antioxidant and anti-inflammatory plant chemical comes from turmeric. Preliminary research suggests that curcumin might prevent heart disease and cancer, and reduce inflammation in people with arthritis.
  • Lutein: This common antioxidant is found in many fruits and vegetables, but highest amounts are found in green leafy vegetables. High lutein intake has been associated with lower risks of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
  • Lycopene: A red pigment found primarily in tomatoes, lycopene has been studied for its ability to prevent atherosclerosis and macular degeneration, and reduce cancer risk.
