4 Big Ideas For Kickstarting Your Health This Year and Next


Your health is rooted in your gut.  If you have a healthy gut, it’s likely you’re pretty healthy all around. If you get sick a lot, have seasonal allergies or a chronic illness like chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia or another auto-immune disease, then your gut most likely needs some attention.

Why? Because 80% of your immune system resides in your gut.  That gut is a pretty cool place. It’s the area where interaction with the outside world is more than any other place in the body. The gut’s job is to decide what comes into your body (nutrients) and what stays out (bacteria, parasites, wastes etc.)  When your gut becomes “leaky” and not able to differentiate between good and bad, many health problems show up.  These problems can range from bloating and stomach pain all the way to depression, migraines, thyroid disease and more.

Here are 4 biggies on making good with your gut naturally!

1.  Clean up your diet

Your food should nourish you.  Get rid of the sugar and foods that have been refined, processed, are genetically modified or non-organic.  Cut down on or eliminate altogether the caffeine and alcohol.  These are irritating to your gut and wearing on your adrenals.

Instead, eat quality proteins like wild fish and game, organic and pasture raised & grass fed beef, pork, lamb and poultry.  Consume healthy fats from avocados, coconut oil, olives and olive oil and complex carbs from squashes, sweet potatoes, plantains and other fruits and vegetables.

2.  Heal your gut (The 4 R’s)

  • Remove inflammatory foods like gluten, dairy, corn and soy along with other foods you are sensitive to.  Beware of gastric irritants listed above (caffeine and alcohol).
  • Replace inflammatory foods with nutrient-dense types and other ingredients for proper digestion like digestive enzymes.
  • Re-inoculate with beneficial bacteria from probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, sauerkraut and other fermented foods to restore gut balance.
  • Repair the lining of your gut with healing bone broths or supplements like  L-glutamine, aloe or fish oil.

3.  Reduce your body’s toxins

You can do this by chosing organic over conventional produce, eating fish that have lower mercury and other heavy metal content and filtering your water from chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals and pesticides.  A HEPA filter is a great way to filter your inside air of pollutants and changing to green household cleaning products is another great way to reduce your body’s toxic burden.

4.  Learn to handle stress better

When you are stressed you feel it in your body.  Chronic, low-level stress from all sources has definite consequenses including weight gain, illness susceptibility and other immune related illnesses.

Let go of stress this year. Take some time each day for yourself with that goal in mind. Adopt a low-intensity exercise practice like yoga, walking, or hiking. Maybe try a guided meditation, or take just 15 minutes to enjoy a comforting read or cup of herbal tea.
