Should You Test Your Nutrient Status?

TEXT

Today I’d like to talk about one important FAQ….

I often get asked whether if you eat well, work out and take a good multivitamin, do you really need to work on your health beyond that??

Well, the short answer is yes, probably…

Even people that take great care of themselves, have some health blocks that include micronutrient deficiencies.

Here are some of the reasons why that may be:

  • Biochemical Individuality – Because like we have different thumbprints, hair color and genetic variances, we all have different requirements.
  • Aging – Our requirements for micronutrients change at 30, 40, 50 and beyond.  Absorption difficulties, especially of vitamin B12, quite commonly occur as we age.
  • Absorption – Even if you eat the best diet in the world.  If you can’t absorb the essential stuff, you are going to wind up with deficiencies.
  • Chronic illness or conditions – MS, thyroid disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, fatigue just to name a few, affect micronutrient status.
  • Lifestyle Demands – Intense work outs, alcohol, smoking, sedentary living and pharmaceuticals can deplete your micronutrient status.

Her is an example of  just a few very common deficiencies seen with anti-inflammatory usage.  I’m talking steroids (Prednisone, Medrol, Decadron, Aristocort), NSAIDS, aspirin and salicylates.

The list below is extremely general and some deficiencies are more common with each specific type of anti-inflammatory….

Common Deficiencies:  Calcium (osteoporosis, heart and blood pressure irregularities, tooth decay), Vitamins B5 (fatigue), B6 (depression), B12 (anemia), C (poor wound healing), D (osteoporosis, muscle weakness, hearing loss), Magnesium (cardiovascular problems, PMS), Zinc (immune system deficiencies, sexual dysfunction, smell/taste dysfunction), Folic Acid (birth defects, cervical dysplasia), Selenium (lowered immunity, poor thyroid hormone conversion), Chromium (diabetes risk), and Iron (brittle nails, hair loss).

So what do you do?

Take charge of your nutritional health by scheduling a micronutrient test with your health practitioner.
